April Kitchen Reads by Rachael Afra

Let's take a virtual trip through France, where culinary adventures await! France is on my to-visit-again list, and these exceptional page-turning reads you make me want to book a trip stat. Trust me; you'll enjoy every one of these food journeys. First, hear stories of everyday people living extravagant lives in oyster mecca. Next, learn how a female cyclist tours France in search of the most decadent foods, memorable people, and unique experiences. Last, read how one family pours love into their culture-rich recipes, strengthening their bonds and cementing their traditions. Recently, my sister and I ate at a sushi bar with small floating boats carrying delicious sushi. Later we finished with sorbet at a small gelateria. It made me realize the importance of family. Please enjoy these reads and all the valuable information they contain.

Mireille Gulliano's book, Meet Paris Oyster: A Love Affair with the Perfect Food, is a treat for oyster lovers. Learn how, when, and where to eat oysters, depending on which region in France: Paris, Brittany, or Normandy. Experience how fresh oysters pair well with the saltiness of fresh butter, wine, cider, or beer, depending on the area. In France, oyster lovers eat them naked—no sauce, as is—with rye bread, butter, and Sancerre or Champagne. In New Orleans, oyster lovers enjoy them with hot vinegar sauce, lemon, or naked with a Sazerac. Deep-fried oysters on a baguette with an ice-cold beer keep it casual. Are you hungry yet? Enjoy a simple life savoring rich food.

Felicity Cloake's epic journey of food and travel, One More Croissant for the Road, describes a tale of a female cyclist searching for the most delicious foods around France. Chronicling flavor-rich dishes while visiting unique places within the country, she shows how certain ingredients add flavor to familiar dishes. Every region within France is different, from the beach to the mountains. My favorite recipe is mussels with added crème fraiche, slowly melted, with parsley. As a food memoir and travel story, Felicity shows how to enjoy tasty dishes, how to travel lightly as a cyclist, and how to inspire those interested in delicious food. Eat well!

Lastly, enjoy In a French Kitchen: Tales and Traditions of Everyday Home Cooking in France. In this beautiful read, Susan Herrmann Loomis describes how a family pours love into their food to create memories and pass down traditions. Create memories by putting passion into your food with simple ingredients. Learn to cook savory, rich French food at home instead of going to a restaurant. Deep dive into all things French: how they live, when, and how they eat. One bonus—her book showcases savory dishes made by her elders. Enjoy Susan's book full of culinary tricks and health and wellness tips.

If you're like me, these reads have you booking a trip to France. Every page makes you want to enjoy life where schedules do not exist. Enjoy!
