Chefs know it’s essential to have the right tools — like the knife! It’s the go-to instrument in all kitchens, large and small, home and professional. Some knife lovers revere these sharp-edged beauties as artwork. They love to ink their arms with culinary-themed tattoos of their favorite foods, small plates, happy memories, and even the fork and knife. While some chefs wear tattoos of both instruments, others wear only one; ultimately, they see them as a badge of honor. The knife and fork are creative extensions of their hands, known as their magic wands.
There’s a great story called Heaven and Hell: The Parable of the Long Spoons, where a man asks God about Heaven and Hell, so God shows him. He asks, “What would you do if your limbs were long spoons?” A big bowl of stew is in front of them, and they can’t feed themselves. “Hell, right?” The same scene presents itself again, although the people are fuller, happier, and content this time. “How did it come to be? They fed one other. Heaven!”
A few words on the art of handling knives …
- Be mindful and respectful of the knife, and don’t lose a finger!
- Always be attentive when cutting.
- If you are moving behind someone cutting, always yell, “Behind!”
- When the knife handler hears this remark on the line, he will remain in the same place to prevent injury.
- A knife injury is no joke, so please use caution.
- Always hand wash your knives with soap, and pat dry.
Have I picked the right knife?
Holding it in your dominant hand should be a certain weight, feel balanced, and be comfortable for your wrists.
Folks in the industry spend time loving and sharing food — so much so that it’s our love language. So, dear chefs, do what you do best. Just be careful and exercise caution one cut at a time — and show off your ink, ha!
